Accommodations / Port-Menier and the Chalets Patate 1 and 2
For the first night on the island, we will stay in Port-Menier at the Gite du Copaco. The idea is to take full advantage of the abundance of deer, great blue herons and other bird life in Port-Menier and to be in Baie-Sainte-Claire at the optimal time for photography, in the late afternoon and for the rest of the evening. We will begin our hour and a half drive for the Potato cottages the next day towards the end of the morning after another photo session in Port-Menier.
Chalets Patate 1 and 2are Sepaq Anticosti cottages located at the mouth of the Potato River, in the heart of the island, on the north shore (building in red in the top image). It is an ideal site for wildlife and landscape photography and a strategic location for vehicle travel. Each section is equipped with a kitchen with a propane stove and refrigerator, a bathroom with shower and four bedrooms. We will have our meals together in chalet 1, on the left in the picture. The environment of the Bay of Potato is one of the most majestic on the island and one of the most game-rich. In addition, you can photograph superb sunrises and sunsets nearby. If you are a fishing enthusiast, you can fish for sea trout directly in front of the cottages. Don't forget your sleeping bag, pillowcase, towels and facecloths as bedding is not provided at the Potato cottages but they are included in Port-Menier.
My wife Claire will be our cook at the Potato Chalets. She will prepare meals and lunches for the excursions. Meal times will vary, depending on the weather and planned hikes. Coffee and muffins are available early in the morning for those who want to get up early. At 7 am, a full breakfast will be available. After breakfast, lunchs plan will be finalized. We normally leave for a good part of the day, always depending on the weather. The evening meal is served late because there is beautiful photography to be done until dusk and even a little later.
Food allergies or others, please let me know in advance
Wines and Alcohols
Wines and alcohols is not included in the package. There is a SAQ counter in Port-Menier. Interestingly, there is a good selection of wines, beers and alcohol, given the remoteness of Anticosti. We will pass through it when you arrive.
Note on vehicles
We will have two Sepaq 4x4 double cab trucks with automatic transmission, air conditioning, and radio communication. I will drive one of the vehicles and my friend Louis Lavoie, a photographer-trainer, will drive the other vehicle. If you wish to drive, it is important to check with your insurer to see if you have a FAQ no. 27 endorsement covering a vehicle with a minimum value of $45,000. You will need to bring a copy of this endorsement with you.
Shoes and Clothing
Water sport boots are essential for excursions in riverbeds and along the seaside.
Walking boots will also be useful for you.
Wear your heaviest clothes for the flight, you will save a few pounds for your camera equipment. You will need: fleece, rain jacket, pants with detachable legs, light long-sleeved shirts, bathing suit, hat or cap, polarized sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent.
Fly with your cameras around your neck and attach your large lenses to them. Put the rest in a photo bag that you can take in your carry-on luggage.
Tripods, memory cards, battery charger, camera manuals, polarizing filters, ND or other, laptops and external hard drive if you want to empty your memory cards, lens cleaning kit, flashlight, knee pads, plastic bag to protect your cameras from dust when travelling in a truck
Please note that it will be possible to charge your camera and laptop batteries as we will have a generator available.
I have several hiking and excursions scenarios in mind. Not to be missed are the Vauréal Canyon and the waterfall, but also the little-known photogenic corners of the island. We will discuss it together on site.
Hiking does not require a high level of physical fitness and is not mandatory. We will walk in the riverbeds, along the seashore line and on forest trails, stopping regularly to take pictures. We will not escalate.
A day is planned to visit the Jupiter River and another one day for the Chicotte sector on the south side. You will see why Anticosti is well known as the "largest island in the Gulf of St. Lawrence". We will have a long way to go, but it will be another day that you will fill your memory cards.
Sea trout and salmon fishing
Fishing enthusiasts can fish for sea trout from the beach in front of the Potato Chalets. It may not be miraculous fishing, but sometimes we have beautiful surprises and unique photo opportunities. In addition, sea trout is excellent as a tartar or on the grill.... You don't need a right of access to fish in the sea. You can fish there with a fly rod or spinning gear. For those who want to try fly fishing, I will be happy to show you some basics. No need for equipment, I'll have what it takes. To fish for salmon in the Potato River (fly fishing only), there is a daily access fee ($18.25) and a provincial salmon licence is required. They are available at Mcdonald Inn, 15 minutes from the Potato Cottages.
8 or 9 foot rod, reel, floating silk # 7 or 8. Single hook flies: Muddler Minnow in all its forms, Mickey Finn, Hornberg, Black Ghost, Green Machine, Grey Ghost, Pattern Fly, Black Wolf, Brown Wolf and more...
Anything good for lake or river speckled trout will do!
